Gateway Recovery House is a wonderful program for women that provides an opportunity for a new start. In November 1983, I was a resident of Gateway and since then, for almost 34 years, I have stayed sober, living a successful, healthy and prosperous life that 34 years ago, I didn't think was possible. The Director, management, and program staff are excellent. As was advised, I stayed at Gateway for four months in order to get the full benefit of the program, and to help ensure a successful consistent recovery. The structured program, environment, and tools I got from Gateway were invaluable. I have used them used them ever since. Like many people, I really did not know what alcoholism was, much less what recovery and sobriety were. My mother was an alcoholic and died at the early age of just 47 years old. I remember our family thought she just needed willpower to get and stay sober. We thought she was weak and uncaring and would get angry at her. We thought if she just had a job, or a number of other things, those things would get her sober. We had no idea that alcoholism is a disease. Like diabetes or other kinds of diseases, and a person needs treatment for alcoholism. We wouldn't get angry at her if she had diabetes. Gateway taught me about what alcoholism is, and provided the treatment and tools for me to get and stay sober, and have a great life!
